New Delhi : “Subah ho gayi mamu,” Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke exclaimed on Saturday, borrowing the iconic Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. catchphrase to take a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi moments after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation. Addressing hundreds of supporters gathered at the protest site, a visibly jubilant Dipke said Pradhan’s resignation was achieved through sustained student protests over the NEET paper leak controversy.
“This resignation is proof that if you people are not afraid, if you people do not bow down to this government, then we can take the resignation of anyone,” Dipke told the crowd. Taking a dig at PM Modi, Dipke said, “Narendra Modiji, democracy has dawned, mamu. This is only the beginning, just the first wicket. The fight is far from over yet.” He added, “People used to say that this government never accepted resignations, but today we have shown that with enough determination, even the impossible can be made possible.”
The CJP leader urged protesters to remain steadfast, stressing that the minister’s departure was only one of the movement’s objectives. According to Dipke, the agitation would continue until two additional demands were addressed by the government. “There’s no need to be afraid. This is democracy. He has resigned, but we have two more demands. We won’t go like this. Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned. But the families of the children who committed suicide should receive compensation of one crore rupees.
CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were also present at the Jantar Mantar protest site when news broke. Reacting to it, Ranka reiterated the party’s broader objective of reforming the education sector, saying the movement was aimed at “bettering the entire Indian education system”. “If you accept our three demands in writing, we will go home. We have requested permission to take out a peaceful candle march across the country,” Ranka said, adding that the party aimed to “better the entire Indian education system”.
Das said the government had invited the party for another round of talks at 3.30 pm, but maintained that demonstrators would not leave the protest site until all demands were accepted in writing. “We’re not going anywhere until all our demands are met and they give them in writing. This is a huge victory,” he said. In an emotional moment during his speech, Dipke recalled the names of students who died by suicide following the NEET paper leak controversy and appealed to those present to observe a two-minute silence in their memory.
