Patna : Bihar CM Nitish Kumar is poised to resign on Wednesday, triggering the formal process for his swearing-in for an unprecedented 10th term. Nitish Kumar will first be elected leader of the JD(U) legislature party after members convene at the state office at 11 am, senior party functionaries said. MLAs from all five NDA partners will convene in the Central Hall of the Bihar Assembly to formally elect Nitish Kumar as leader of the alliance, officials said.
He will then head to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation as Chief Minister and present letters of support to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, staking claim to form the new government. The outgoing Assembly will be then be dissolved. The NDA romped to victory in Bihar last week, winning 202 seats in the 243-member House. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, followed by the JD(U)’s 85. Smaller allies like Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV) with 19 seats, HAM with five and RLM with four seats consolidated the alliance’s commanding majority.
Nitish Kumar is scheduled to take oath as chief minister on Thursday morning, officials familiar with the planning said. Several ministers will be sworn in alongside him at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan. Preparations for the oath ceremony have begun at the historic venue, where a massive security deployment is in place ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers and chief ministers of NDA-ruled states are also expected to attend.
The biggest flashpoint is the Home portfolio, long held by Nitish Kumar. JD(U) insiders say the party is unwilling to part with the key portfolio, while the BJP is pushing for a larger share in key ministries after emerging as the single-largest party. The tussle extends to the Speaker’s post as well. Both parties reportedly want the chair, with the BJP insisting on retaining it. In the outgoing assembly, Nand Kishore Yadav of the BJP served as Speaker and JD(U)’s Narendra Narayan Yadav as Deputy Speaker.
