A devastating accident in Sydney has claimed the life of a 33-year-old Indian woman, just weeks before she was due to welcome her second child, underscoring the perils of reckless driving on city streets.
Samanvitha Dhareshwar, eight months into her pregnancy, was out for an evening stroll with her husband and their three-year-old son along George Street in Hornsby last Friday around 8 p.m. The family’s routine walk turned fatal in an instant, as New South Wales police detailed in their investigation.
According to authorities, a Kia Carnival had pulled over to allow Dhareshwar and her loved ones to safely cross a pedestrian path near a car park entrance. In a split second, a high-speed BMW slammed into the rear of the stationary Kia, propelling it forward with lethal force. The collision struck Dhareshwar directly, inflicting injuries so severe that paramedics could not save her or the unborn baby she carried.
Rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition, Dhareshwar succumbed to her wounds despite immediate medical intervention. Neither her husband nor their young son appears to have sustained injuries, though police have not released further details on their well-being.
The BMW’s driver, identified as 19-year-old Aaron Papazoglu—a provisional license holder known as a P-plater—was taken into custody at his Wahroonga residence shortly after the incident. He walked away from the crash unharmed, as did the Kia driver, but now faces serious legal consequences. Papazoglu has been formally charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, and causing the loss of a fetus.
Refused bail by a local magistrate due to the gravity of the offenses, Papazoglu awaits trial, potentially under the provisions of Zoe’s Law. Enacted in New South Wales in 2022, this legislation imposes stricter penalties for vehicular crimes resulting in the death of an unborn child, including up to three additional years behind bars added to any base sentence for dangerous or negligent driving.
