Attack On Democracy Major Risk To India : Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi

Colombia : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again accused the ruling BJP of eroding India’s democratic fabric, this time while addressing students at EIA University in Colombia. Gandhi said he remained very optimistic about India because of its cultural diversity, technological strength, and healthcare system. But, he cautioned, the country faced serious risks.

Gandhi also drew a sharp contrast with China. We can’t do what China does, which is suppress people and run an authoritarian system. Our design will just not accept that, he said. Rahul Gandhi also criticised the demonetisation policy of the BJP government in 2016, calling it a failure. They demonetised currency with the idea that they’d get rid of cash. Doesn’t work. As a policy, it was a failure, the Congress leader said.

When asked about methods to deal with corruption, Rahul Gandhi called decentralisation of power an effective way to deal with corruption, but then alleged rampant corruption in the ruling government. Rahul Gandhi’s remarks drew a sharp reaction from the ruling party, with BJP MP Kangana Ranaut launching a scathing attack on the Congress leader.

This is not the first time the Congress MP has attacked the ruling party from foreign soil. Over the years, Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly used overseas platforms to hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, drawing sharp criticism from the government. At Cambridge University in 2024, Gandhi had said Indian democracy was under attack, prompting BJP leader Anurag Thakur to accuse him of having “a habit of lying and defaming India.
