10 Workers Killed After Blast Rocks Meghalaya Coal Mine, Several Others Feared Trapped

Tashkhai : A coal mine blast in Meghalaya on Thursday claimed the lives of at least 10 workers after a major explosion in Tashkhai. The blast occurred inside a coal mine, leading to heavy casualties among labourers present at the site. Authorities suspect that most of the victims were workers from Assam.

The explosion occurred inside the mine during working hours, resulting in heavy casualties among labourers present at the site. Initial reports indicate that most of the victims were migrant workers, with authorities suspecting that several were from neighbouring Assam. Black smoke is seen coming out of the mine as the labourers are seen around the site. The labourers who are outside are seen gathering at the spot. Some women and children are also seen at the spot.

Rescue and recovery operations were carried out following the incident, and authorities are investigating the exact cause of the blast. Meghalaya Police deployed multiple teams to the area soon after the incident, launching rescue operations to locate any survivors and retrieve bodies trapped inside the mine. Efforts were continuing late into the evening as officials worked amid difficult terrain and safety concerns.

Preliminary information suggests that one of the deceased was a resident of Bihara village in Assam’s Katigorah area. The identities of other victims are being verified, and officials said further details would be confirmed once the rescue operation is completed.

Investigators are examining whether unsafe mining practices or the presence of explosive gases may have triggered the explosion. The mine has been sealed as part of the investigation. Coal mining in parts of Meghalaya has long raised concerns over safety and regulation, with several past incidents highlighting risks faced by labourers working in hazardous conditions. Authorities said safety protocols and compliance records of the mine would be scrutinised as part of the inquiry.
