Amethi: Twenty-year-old uncapped left-arm spin all-rounder Prashant Veer from Uttar Pradesh created a massive sensation in the cricketing world on Tuesday at the IPL Mini Auction in Abu Dhabi. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) snapped him up for a record-breaking ₹14.20 crore against a base price of just ₹30 lakh. For Prashant’s family, it felt like Diwali had arrived twice in two months. By securing such a big IPL contract in his very first season, Prashant has lifted a huge financial burden off his teacher-father’s shoulders.
Chennai had traded experienced spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals ahead of the auction, and Prashant Veer was brought in as his replacement from the new generation of spin all-rounders. This move directly transformed the fortunes of Prashant’s family.
Prashant’s father, a school teacher, earns barely ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 per month and could not afford the expenses of his son’s cricket coaching. However, impressed by Prashant’s talent, his grandfather and two local coaches—Goyal Sir and Akram Sir—extended financial support. With proper coaching, Prashant delivered several match-winning performances at the local level and later for Uttar Pradesh, which eventually brought him into CSK’s good books.
Prashant thanks God
Creating a new benchmark among uncapped players (those who have not played a single international match), Prashant Veer from Shahjipur village near Amethi said it had been his childhood dream to play for CSK, especially alongside MS Dhoni. That dream is now coming true. In an interview, Prashant said, “It feels like God has heard my prayers.”

Mumbai started the bidding, Chennai sealed the deal
At Tuesday’s auction, Mumbai Indians opened the bidding at Prashant’s base price of ₹30 lakh, followed by a fierce contest with Lucknow. Chennai then entered the fray and locked horns with Lucknow, while Rajasthan and Hyderabad also joined the race. Eventually, CSK clinched the deal at ₹14.20 crore.
Friends call Prashant “David Miller”
Known for his explosive lower-order batting, Prashant, during his college days while staying in a hostel, often wore a green jersey similar to South African players. His coaches started calling him “David Miller,” and the nickname stuck among his friends.
