India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been crowned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2025, following a remarkable run in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy that saw him shatter multiple records. He beat England’s Ben Stokes and South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder to claim the honor.
The 25-year-old led from the front in his debut Test series as skipper, amassing 567 runs at an astonishing average of 94.50 in three matches. His tally featured a double hundred and two centuries across six innings.
“It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This one means more because it’s for my first series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham will always be special one of the highlights of my England tour,” Gill said, reflecting on the series. He praised both teams’ performances and thanked the ICC jury and his teammates for their support, adding that he aims to maintain his form and deliver more success for India.

This is Gill’s fourth ICC Player of the Month award, having previously won in February 2025, January 2023, and September 2023. He is now the first male cricketer to win the accolade four times, joining women’s stars Ash Gardner and Hayley Matthews in the elite group.
Gill’s crowning moment came at Edgbaston, where he produced a match-defining 269 in the first innings after India were struggling at 95/2, followed by 161 in the second innings powering India to a 336-run victory. His combined match total of 430 runs is the second-highest in Test history, behind only Graham Gooch’s 456.
The innings also set several new records:
- First Indian captain to score a Test double century in England.
- Second Indian skipper after Virat Kohli to hit a double ton outside India.
- Broke Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 for the highest Test score by an Indian in England.
- Surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 21-year-old mark for the highest overseas score by an Indian outside Asia.
Gill faced a brief setback at Lord’s with scores of 16 and 6, but bounced back spectacularly at Old Trafford with a gritty 103 in the second innings. The knock saved India from an innings defeat and ensured the series ended 2-2.
That Old Trafford century came in a pressure situation India were reeling at 0/2 while chasing 311 to avoid innings embarrassment. Battling at No. 4, Gill’s composure and shot selection turned the tide, cementing his leadership credentials in his first assignment as captain.

Gill ended the five-Test series with 754 runs from 10 innings at an average of 75.40 the second-highest aggregate in World Test Championship history and also bagged the Player of the Series award. His ability to convert starts into big scores in crucial moments played a decisive role in India’s strong World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign, where they now sit third on the table.
