Rohit Sharma Wants To Continue, But Selectors Ready To Move Past Veteran

Rohit Sharma’s farewell game for India may be the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s on July 19. After the England series, the senior selection committee of the BCCI reportedly told him that they had chosen to “move on” from him.

Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly spoke with the panel last week. Sources claim that the selection committee has stated that it does not see a place for Sharma in the 2027 World Cup and wants to give young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings, a chance.

“The selectors have told Rohit that they are moving on from him after this series and that he does not fit into their plans for the England tour. Particularly after improving his fitness, he wanted to keep going. According to an Indian board source, “the selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court.”

On the fringes of the England series, Sharma reportedly spoke with a few BCCI officials, and the opener wasn’t pleased with the outcome. Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, ahead of India’s summer tour of England, and from Twenty20 Internationals on June 29, 2024, just hours after leading India to the World Cup.

Last year, Shubman Gill took Sharma’s place as ODI captain when the selection committee ousted him. With the future of Indian cricket in mind, the panel is reportedly eager to give younger players an opportunity after consulting with the team management.

Leading India to the 2023 World Cup final, where the team’s all-out offensive strategy from the top order revolutionized how India batted in the format, is part of Sharma’s ODI captaincy record. Under his direction, India’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign followed the same audacious, aggressive model the following year.
