BCCI Clears The Air On Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Speculation; Virat Kohli’s On-Field Reaction Says It All

London: Until just a few days ago, discussions were centred around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continuing their international careers until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, sudden speculation over the possible retirement of both stalwarts—especially Rohit Sharma—has shifted the spotlight onto the two Indian legends, drawing attention from cricket fans across the world. Over the last 12 hours, though, the narrative has changed significantly. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a late-night clarification regarding Rohit’s future, Virat Kohli, one of the fittest and most passionate cricketers in the game today, also appeared to hint through a light-hearted on-field incident that he is far from thinking about retirement.

Both Retired from T20Is and Tests Together

It is worth noting that over the past two years, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements from T20 Internationals and Test cricket around the same period. That naturally fuelled speculation that they could also retire from ODI cricket together.

Two Legendary Careers Spanning Nearly Two Decades

Born in Nagpur in 1987, Rohit Sharma has now completed 39 years of age and is in the 19th year of his international career, which began in 2007. Virat Kohli, born in Delhi in 1988, is now 38 years old and has completed 18 years in international cricket.

Rohit’s Parents Arrive in London

Rumours gathered pace after Rohit Sharma’s parents arrived in London two days ago. Speculation suggested that Rohit wanted to announce his retirement in their presence, making Sunday’s third and final ODI against England at Lord’s his last international appearance.

Rohit Remains a Regular Member of the ODI Team: BCCI

However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia put an end to the rumours during a late-night conversation with PTI on Friday.

“There has been a lot of media speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s future in international cricket. I want to firmly clarify that there has been absolutely no discussion within the BCCI about Sunday’s match being his final international appearance. Rohit remains a regular member of India’s ODI team and, as per the team’s plans, will continue representing the country. Simply put, the Lord’s ODI is not his farewell match.”

Virat Kohli’s Future Also Under the Spotlight

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli continues to show tremendous enthusiasm for international cricket, something reflected in a small but telling incident during the ongoing England series.

Virat Seems Eager to Continue Playing

Fondly known as “Cheeku” by his fans since his early days, Virat Kohli was sitting near the boundary boards during the second ODI against England in Cardiff on Thursday when a nearby cameraman shouted, “Cheeku, don’t retire before the 2027 ODI World Cup.”

Hearing the remark, Kohli burst into a smile that appeared to reflect how relaxed and unconcerned he is about the ongoing retirement rumours. His cheerful reaction suggested that he still feels fit, motivated, and eager to continue playing for India. The stylish smile also hinted that Kohli completely agreed with the cameraman’s wish to see him continue until at least the 2027 ODI World Cup.
