Karachi: Pakistan cricket is once again under scrutiny, as controversies continue to surround the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The latest case involves all-rounder Mohammed Nawaz and his drug test.
Certain substances (stimulants) are sometimes consumed to boost physical energy and performance. However, under the regulations of the International Cricket Council, the use of prohibited substances—knowingly or unknowingly—can lead to an official investigation against a player.
Pakistan’s star cricketer Mohammed Nawaz has reportedly been implicated in such a case. The incident dates back to the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where Nawaz is alleged to have played after consuming a banned substance. Following a positive test report, the Pakistan Cricket Board has initiated an investigation.
The 32-year-old Nawaz is currently representing Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. Until the PCB concludes its investigation, he will not be allowed to participate in Surrey County’s upcoming T20 Blast tournament.
A similar case occurred last year involving South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who had played a few matches in the Indian Premier League but missed the remainder of the tournament after unknowingly consuming a banned recreational substance.
Following Rabada, Nawaz is now the second international cricketer to be linked with the use of recreational drugs.
Interestingly, the PCB had issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to Nawaz just last week, allowing him to participate in Surrey County’s tournament.
In the India vs Pakistan match of the T20 World Cup held in Colombo on February 15 this year, Nawaz had run out Shivam Dube (27 runs). However, he failed to take a wicket, conceding 28 runs, and later scored just four runs before being caught by Dube off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav.
