Ashes in India? Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg Says Idea Is ‘Open for Consideration’

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg has signalled openness to the idea of staging a Test match between England and Australia in India, citing the size and value of the Indian market.

England and Australia have contested the Ashes since 1882, with hosting duties shared between the two nations. The most recent series, played in 2025-26 in Australia, ended in a 4-1 win for the hosts. The next edition is scheduled for the English summer of 2027.

Beyond the regular Ashes cycle, the two sides are also set to meet in Melbourne next March to mark the 150th anniversary of their first-ever contest. When asked whether that exhibition fixture could instead be shifted to India, Greenberg responded positively to the suggestion.

The comments come soon after it emerged that Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) will open its next season with a match in Chennai, India home of the IPL’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

England vs Australia Test in India?

While there is no confirmation of any such fixture at this stage, Greenberg struck a positive tone on the possibility, pointing to the scale of the Indian market.

“Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong. And clearly, there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. That’s not something we are currently planning, but it would be certainly open for consideration,” he said, speaking to a BBC podcast.

“I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it,” he added.

Greenberg also acknowledged the logistical hurdles involved in expanding the international calendar. “The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there are only 365 days in a schedule and we probably need another month or two if we actually can generate the content we want to,” he said.

What Makes India So Lucrative?

Cricket remains the biggest sport in India, a country with a population of more than 1.3 billion. A recent report by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) underlined this commercial importance, noting that English cricket is expected to turn a profit on the back of its recently completed white-ball tour of India even as it projects a loss despite hosting both the men’s and women’s Ashes in 2027.
