Mirabai Chanu Wins First Asian Games Medal With Silver, Equals Karnam Malleswari’s Record

Nagoya : India’s top weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medallist and a three-time Commonwealth Games medallist, has finally won her first-ever medal at the Asian Games.

Medal at all six major competitions

Mirabai Chanu finished second in the women’s 49kg category on Wednesday to claim the silver medal. She has now become only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win medals at all six major international competitions in weightlifting. The six major events are the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Championships and Asian Championships.

Two months ago, after winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, Chanu had told reporters, “My achievements cannot yet be called complete because I have still not won an Asian Games medal.”

Lifted a total of 198kg

Chanu’s Asian Games medal has given a new dimension to her illustrious career. She lifted 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total lift of 198kg to take the silver medal.

North Korea’s Ri Song Gum won the gold medal with a total lift of 215kg.

A good overall day for India

Overall, Wednesday turned out to be a productive day for India at the Asian Games in Japan. Indian athletes also won medals in shooting and soft tennis. India also put up strong performances in kabaddi, boxing, rowing, squash, canoe sprint and table tennis.

India’s medal tally reaches 11

India have won only one gold medal so far, with the women’s cricket team securing it. In addition, Indian athletes have won five silver and five bronze medals, taking the overall tally to 11.

China lead the medal table with 60 medals, including 36 golds. Japan are second with 48 medals, including 11 golds, while South Korea are third with 30 medals, including seven golds.
