Cricket Australia Approves Privatisation Of BBL

The Melbourne Renegades will be the first team to go through a sales process, marking a significant step forward for Cricket Australia in attracting private investment to the Big Bash League. In order to get the Renegades under new ownership for the 2027–2028 season, CA will solicit proposals from private investors. Although any future transactions will be evaluated under a self-determination mechanism that permits each state member to choose the best course for its club and community, the move may open the door for other BBL clubs to follow.

“Cricket Australia and its State members are committed to advancing the interests of cricket at all levels, as well as to investing in and expanding the BBL and WBBL. “Starting the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment for the game,” stated CA chairman Mike Baird. “Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game by opening the door to private investment in the Big Bash Leagues.”

Cricket Australia made it clear that the board and its state members will continue to have significant authority over important aspects of Australian cricket.

Importantly, Baird stated, “CA and its members will retain control over the most important aspects of Australian cricket operations, including international scheduling, player availability, the Big Bash Leagues salary caps, branding proposals as well as the reserve price for a licence to operate that must be achieved and approval of investors.”

This is a big choice that has required a great deal of research, debate, and cooperation over several months. “As we move toward what we think is the best way to secure cricket’s future in this country, strengthen the Big Bash, and protect our standing on the global stage, I’d like to thank everyone involved,” he continued.
