Mumbai Tabela Milk Prices Set to Climb From September 1, Retail Rates

Consumers in Mumbai will pay more for fresh milk supplied from local cattle sheds, known as tabela milk, starting September 1. The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has raised the wholesale price from Rs 93 to Rs 102 per litre. As a result, retail prices are expected to move from around Rs 100 to approximately Rs 110 per litre. The new rates will remain in place until February 28, 2027.

Producers attribute the increase to higher production and operational expenses. Costs of key cattle feed items, including green fodder, grain husks (chuni), and oil cakes, have risen by up to 25 percent over the past year. Transport charges and the overall expense of maintaining livestock have also increased substantially.

The revision applies to wholesale rates, so the final price charged to customers may differ depending on individual vendors and suppliers. The increase is not expected to be uniform across all areas of the city.

The timing coincides with the approaching festive season, when demand for milk and dairy products usually rises. Households may therefore face an added cost burden during this period.

This adjustment is distinct from a recent statewide decision in Maharashtra. Earlier this month, the state government approved a Rs 2 per litre increase in cow and buffalo milk prices after discussions with dairy producers and processors. The latest change in Mumbai relates specifically to costs faced by local fresh milk producers operating cattle sheds.

The move reflects ongoing pressures on the city’s traditional milk supply chain as input costs continue to climb. Residents relying on daily deliveries of tabela milk will see the higher rates take effect from the beginning of next month.
