Hi-Tech Opening Ceremony in Japan: Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat Lead India’s Contingent in Asian Games

Nagoya: Although some events, including cricket, at the 20th Asian Games had already begun a few days earlier, the continental multi-sport extravaganza officially got underway in Japan on Saturday with a high-tech Opening Ceremony. The colourful ceremony was held at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

The two-hour ceremony was attended by Japan’s Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, along with the Games’ officials. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia, was also present on the occasion.

The Athletes’ Parade began with Afghanistan. Shooter Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat proudly led India’s 501-member contingent.

The two-hour ceremony began with the Japanese national anthem. Nine members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces carried the host nation’s national flag onto the stage and unfurled it. The stadium was then plunged into darkness, with a spotlight focused only on the national flag, making it the centre of attraction.
