RG Kar Victim’s Parents Claim CBI Threatened To Withdraw From Probe, Victim’s Father Criticized Probe Agency

Kolkata : A year after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the victim’s parents accused the CBI of failing to deliver justice and demanded that the probe agency be disbanded. The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee killed on August 9 2024. A year on, her parents, unhappy with the probe, met the CBI director on Thursday. But when they expressed their dissatisfaction, officials threatened to withdraw from the investigation.

The case was initially handled by Kolkata Police but later transferred to the CBI. The victim’s father said the agency’s withdrawal after a year of investigation was unacceptable. An organisation representing 140 crore people is saying they will drop the case after a year. So, were they just twiddling their thumbs for a year? he said. Is it necessary to keep the CBI at the cost of crores of rupees? Such government agencies should be closed.

The parents said they plan to join a torchlight procession organised by West Bengal junior doctors in Shyambazar on Friday evening and will participate in a Nabanna campaign protest on Saturday. Various groups are planning to hold demonstrations to mark the one-year anniversary of the RG Kar case.

He also alleged corruption and financial dealings behind the stalled probe. If we didn’t have evidence against the CBI, I would not speak like this. We are trying to collect that evidence, he said. They did not meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah during their Delhi trip but said they intend to do so later to raise their concerns about the CBI’s role.

The victim’s mother, who recently received the Nari Shakti Award from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, said she returned it in protest. I told her I will accept this award the day my daughter gets justice, she said. The CBI will not do anything; we will have to protest on the streets, she added. Our fight will continue in court.
