New Delhi : How could a studious young man who devoted most of his time to books be involved in a terror attack? This was the first reaction of the family of Dr Mohammad Umar, the key suspect in the Red Fort blast case. Dr Umar’s sister-in-law said the family was shocked over his name cropping up in the blast case.
Dr Umar, a member of the Faridabad-based terror module that was busted last week, was believed to be in the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday evening, leaving nine dead and over 20 injured. That night, Dr Umar’s two brothers, Ashiq Ahmed and Zahoor Ahmed, and his mother were detained for questioning.
The sister-in-law of Dr Umar, who worked at Faridabad’s Al-Falah University and Hospital, said he last came home to Koil village of Pulwama around two months ago. “I spoke with him on Friday last week. She further said Dr Umar’s arrest left the family devastated. “His mother worked hard to bring the family out of poverty. He was our only hope to come out of poverty,” she further said, her voice breaking.
The fidayeen-style attack at one of the country’s tourist hotspots came on a day a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including 2,900 kg of IED-making material, was recovered from Haryana’s Faridabad after J&K Police and other agencies busted a terror module involving the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind.
