Heavy rainfall continues to batter North India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue severe weather alerts across multiple states. A red alert is in effect for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and heightened risks of flash floods and landslides. The IMD has also placed Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, under an orange alert due to forecasts of intense showers.
In Delhi, the Yamuna River has surpassed its danger level, leading to a flood alert and evacuations near its banks. Authorities have announced the closure of the Old Yamuna Bridge (Loha Pul) to traffic and public movement starting at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, as a precautionary measure, according to the District Magistrate Shahdara. Gurugram has been severely impacted, with over 100 mm of rain recorded in just four hours on Monday, causing widespread waterlogging and a seven-kilometer traffic jam. The District Disaster Management Authority in Gurugram has directed schools, colleges, and offices to remain closed on Tuesday, urging residents to work from home.
Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir are also under an orange alert for heavy rainfall. In Punjab, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will visit flood-affected areas from September 2 to 4. Educational institutions in Chandigarh and Jammu have been ordered to shut down, with Chandigarh schools closed on Tuesday and Jammu’s government and private schools closed due to adverse weather conditions. In Himachal Pradesh, continuous rainfall has led to the closure of schools across multiple districts, including Shimla, Solan, and Kangra.
The IMD forecasts persistent heavy rainfall across Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh over the next 24-36 hours, with a red alert issued for Panchkula, Ambala, and Yamunanagar. Residents are advised to avoid flood-prone areas and follow local authority guidelines as the monsoon continues to disrupt daily life across North India.
