New Delhi : The Greater Noida dowry death case has taken a dramatic turn with fresh allegations surfacing against the victim’s own family. While Nikki Bhati’s family had accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, her sister-in-law Meenakshi, estranged wife of Nikki’s brother Rohit, has now levelled similar charges against Nikki’s father and brother.
Meenakshi, who married Rohit in 2016, alleged that she was tortured for dowry by Nikki’s family. She claimed her father had already given a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz car and 31 tola gold at the time of her marriage, but Nikki’s family demanded a Scorpio SUV. The harassment was relentless, with even Nikki and her sister Kanchan allegedly joining in. “Nikki and Kanchan both used to beat me up,” she said, adding that her mother-in-law and Nikki’s father, Bikhari Singh, also targeted her.
Meenakshi further accused her husband Rohit of assaulting her and alleged that he once fired a shot at her brother. She claimed she was forced to undergo two abortions. Clarifying her stand on her in-laws from Vipin’s family, Meenakshi said, they are not like that at all; they are a very well-off family.
The twist comes even as shocking details continue to emerge from Nikki’s own case.
The woman in her mid-20s was allegedly tortured and set on fire by her husband Vipin and his family in front of her young son and sister. Two disturbing videos of the incident circulated online, showing Nikki being beaten, dragged by her hair, and later limping down the stairs after being set ablaze.
Vipin was later shot in the leg while in police custody when he allegedly tried to snatch a pistol from an inspector and flee near Sirsa Chauraha. Police said he had been taken to recover bottles of inflammable liquid he had purchased. Despite being injured, Vipin showed no remorse.
