Picture this: it’s June 6, 2025, and Indian PM Narendra Modi’s phone buzzes with a call from Canada’s brand-new Prime Minister, Mark Carney. The two hit it off, and Carney drops a big invite come join us at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15-17. Modi’s all in, and this could be the moment India and Canada finally get back on track.
Modi jumped onto X to post the feeling: “Just had a fantastic conversation with PM @MarkJCarney. Huge congratulations on winning the election, and thanks for inviting me to the G7 at Kananaskis. Absolutely thrilled to reconnect!” He didn’t leave it there, highlighting the fact that India and Canada, both proud nations, have a special connection. “With our strong cultural foundation and common values, let’s pump up the collaboration and get things done. Looking forward to the Summit!
Now, let’s get real things between India and Canada haven’t exactly been all roses in recent times. The past couple of years, particularly during the regime of former PM Justin Trudeau, were tough, courtesy the 2023 killing in Canada of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. It had kicked up a diplomatic fuss. But the winds are changing. India’s Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, had a heart-to-heart with Canada’s new Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, recently, discussing how to put the relationship back on track. Jaishankar even went so far as to wish her a warm “all the best” on her new role.
What’s the G7 Buzz About?
Canada is rolling out the red carpet for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, a beautiful mountain community in Alberta that’s not new to international get-togethers it welcomed world leaders in 2002. The summit this year is a biggie, commemorating 50 years of the G7 club, which consists of big league players such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US with the EU hitching a ride.
Time for a New Beginning?
With Carney at the helm of Canada’s ship and Modi set to dive into G7 negotiations, this is like the golden opportunity to press the reset button. The Summit is the ideal place for these two to have a sit-down, perhaps over a cup of coffee, and work out how to re-establish trust and collaboration. Here’s hoping this get-together gives India and Canada a new, shinier chapter!
