Banglore : Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday launched a strong attack on the Centre, accusing it of neglecting Kannada while “imposing” Hindi, and warned that overdependence on English and Hindi was eroding the natural talent of children in the state. The Chief Minister said the federal structure was being undermined as Karnataka continued to be denied its fair share of resources, despite contributing significantly to the national exchequer.
The federal government is meting out step-motherly treatment to Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said. We contribute Rs 4.5 lakh crore in revenue to the Centre, but receive only a paltry amount in return. He alleged that while generous grants are sanctioned for the promotion of Hindi and Sanskrit, other Indian languages, including Kannada are being sidelined. There are continuous attempts to impose Hindi,” he said, calling the move “an injustice to the classical language Kannada.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about the growing dominance of English and Hindi in the education system, arguing that it weakens children’s creativity and connection to their roots. Children of developed nations think, learn, and dream in their mother tongue, but here, the situation is reversed. There is a need to bring laws to introduce the mother tongue as the medium of instruction, he said, urging the Centre to take the issue seriously.
The remarks comes amid the ongoing language row, fuelled by incidents such as mandatory signboards and educational policies. Recent escalations include the Chief Minister’s strong stance against Hindi imposition and alleged neglect of Kannada, leading to calls for protecting the language and its heritage.
