In a coordinated operation, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested five individuals suspected of planning “anti-national activities” across Delhi and three other states. The arrests, which followed weeks of surveillance, targeted a group allegedly linked to a broader terror network with international connections.
Authorities detained two suspects in Delhi, with one each apprehended in Madhya Pradesh, Hyderabad, and Ranchi. Among those arrested was Ashar Danish from Bokaro, Jharkhand, who was picked up in Ranchi, along with Md Aftab from Mumbai and Sufian from Delhi, both seized in the capital, according to police statements issued on Wednesday.
During the raids, police confiscated materials believed to be intended for constructing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The seized items included hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sulfur powder, ball bearings, a weighing scale, beakers, gloves, a respiratory mask, and a plastic box containing strip wires, circuits, motherboards, and diodes. These findings suggest the group was preparing for potential attacks in Delhi and other cities, a senior officer.
The investigation revealed that the suspects were communicating via encrypted apps and acting on instructions from handlers based abroad. A Delhi Police officer described the group as part of a “larger terror network” with ties to banned organizations, though specific details about the outfits were not disclosed. The operation involved raids at over a dozen locations across multiple states, conducted over two weeks, to disrupt the alleged plot.
This crackdown follows a similar operation in August 2024, when the Special Cell arrested 14 suspects across Delhi, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, linked to an al-Qaeda-inspired module, Hindustan Times noted. The Delhi Police continue to investigate the full scope of the network and its plans, with authorities emphasizing the need to counter such threats to national security.
