Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to commence international passenger flight operations from July 15, marking a significant step in the airport’s phased expansion. Alongside passenger services, international cargo freighter operations are also likely to begin on the same date, according to airport officials.
The development was confirmed by NMIA Chairman Captain BVJK Sharma, who stated that the airport is targeting the launch of both international passenger and cargo services next month, subject to the completion of final regulatory requirements and approvals. CNBC-TV18 reported that the move will represent a major milestone in the airport’s growth plans.
Cargo Operations Expected to Scale Up
According to Sharma, freighter services are scheduled to start from July 15 and are expected to gradually increase to nearly 18 weekly cargo flights. International passenger operations are also anticipated to commence around the same time, provided all necessary clearances are in place.
Customs authorities have reportedly completed key readiness reviews, while final notifications and system trials related to cargo and courier operations are nearing completion. A trade notice is expected before the launch date.
Airport Expands Its Role in Mumbai Region
The launch of international services is expected to strengthen the airport’s position as a major aviation hub for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The facility has already been handling domestic operations and is projected to significantly increase passenger and aircraft movement in the coming months.
Initial international routes are likely to focus on short-haul destinations, particularly in the Gulf region, according to officials familiar with the plans.
Boost to Connectivity and Logistics
The introduction of international passenger and cargo operations is expected to ease pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport while enhancing regional connectivity and logistics capabilities. Industry observers believe the expansion will improve travel options for passengers and support trade movement through dedicated cargo services.
As reported by CNBC-TV18, the proposed July 15 launch date remains subject to final approvals, but preparations are progressing toward making Navi Mumbai International Airport a key gateway for both international travellers and cargo operators.
