The tragic death of Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar in a military aircraft crash in Assam has been overshadowed by a painful family dispute concerning the distribution of government compensation.
Kumar, who perished during an operational mission, received full military honours at his funeral in his native village in Bihar. Yet, in the days following the ceremony, his father has voiced serious concerns about how financial support intended for the officer’s dependents was handled.
According to Amarendra Sharma, a compensation cheque of ₹21 lakh was provided to Shreya Rai, a woman from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh whom the family refers to as his son’s partner. Sharma claims that Rai received the payment and departed before the completion of the traditional Shraddha rites, leaving the immediate family uninformed about the transaction until after the funeral proceedings concluded.

The family has stated they were aware of the relationship between Shubham and Shreya and had no objections to it. Discussions for a wedding had been underway, with plans for the ceremony later in the year. Those plans were postponed following the passing of Shubham’s grandmother. After the crash, Rai travelled with the officer’s mortal remains and participated in the funeral rituals alongside relatives, offering support during the immediate period of mourning.
Sharma has expressed disappointment over the lack of transparency in the compensation process. He maintains that the family was not consulted or notified when the cheque was issued. Upon inquiring with local authorities, he learned that the payment had already been released to Rai. While acknowledging that a legally recognised spouse would be entitled to such benefits, he emphasises that the family had no knowledge of any formal court marriage between the couple.
Describing his son as the primary support for the household, Sharma highlighted the modest financial circumstances of the family. Shubham’s loss has created both an emotional and economic gap. The father has appealed to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and relevant authorities, seeking clarity and support to ensure fair consideration for the immediate family in the allocation of benefits.
The incident has sparked emotional discussions in the village, where residents remember the young officer as a dedicated individual who brought pride to his community through his service. The funeral saw large gatherings of villagers and service personnel, with military traditions observed and mementos presented to the bereaved mother.
Central to the ongoing concerns is the question of legal marital status and eligibility for ex-gratia payments provided to families of fallen servicemen. No official details have been publicly shared regarding the documentation that facilitated the release of the funds, and it remains uncertain whether further verification will address the family’s objections.
As the family continues to grieve, the episode underscores the complexities that can arise in the wake of such sacrifices, particularly regarding communication and the handling of support for dependents.
