Mumbai and its surrounding metropolitan region are grappling with severe heat and high humidity, even after scattered weekend showers, as temperatures in several pockets climbed close to 39 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh heatwave warning for the city and neighbouring districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.
On Wednesday, multiple locations across Mumbai recorded unusually high temperatures. Ram Mandir reported 38.7 degrees Celsius, while Byculla touched 37.8 degrees. Elevated readings were also observed in areas such as Vikhroli, Vidyavihar, and Chembur. Both the Santacruz and Colaba observatories logged temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing spell.
The IMD has indicated that hot and humid conditions are likely to persist in Mumbai until Friday morning. Although no additional heatwave warning has been issued specifically for Thursday, the city and adjacent districts remain under a yellow alert. Forecasters expect maximum temperatures to hover between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius until May 30, followed by a gradual decline accompanied by partly cloudy skies.

Weather experts attribute the current dry and oppressive conditions to the absence of significant moisture inflow or active weather systems along the west coast. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services noted that without substantial moisture movement, relief remains limited in the near term. However, he suggested that light rain activity could return to Mumbai and coastal parts of Maharashtra in the coming days.
The heatwave is not confined to Mumbai. Several districts in Maharashtra, including Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Wardha, continue to endure severe conditions with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat, including staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours. The situation highlights the challenging pre-monsoon weather patterns affecting large parts of the state this season
