IMD Issues Yellow Heatwave Alert for Mumbai and Konkan

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast contrasting weather conditions across Maharashtra on May 10, with intense heat gripping coastal regions and the possibility of thunderstorms in inland areas.
According to the IMD, a yellow alert for heatwave-like conditions has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in the Konkan region. These areas are expected to experience hot and humid weather, with rising temperatures prompting concerns over heat-related illnesses. Authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing outdoors during peak afternoon hours to minimize the risk of heatstroke.
The persistent hot and humid conditions have already led to reduced daytime activity on streets in affected urban centers. The IMD warning highlights the need for caution, particularly among vulnerable populations, as the combination of high temperatures and humidity can exacerbate discomfort and health issues.

In contrast, the IMD has issued alerts for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in nine districts across Vidarbha and Marathwada. These regions may see moderate to intense rainfall along with gusty winds, raising concerns for standing crops and agricultural activities. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect their produce from potential damage due to sudden weather shifts.
The rest of Maharashtra is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with continued heat during the day, though some relief from cooler temperatures may occur in the early morning and evening hours. The IMD has called on citizens to stay updated with official forecasts and follow safety guidelines amid these fluctuating conditions.
This mixed weather pattern underscores the variability currently affecting the state, where strong sunshine in some areas coincides with the threat of pre-monsoon activity in others. The IMD continues to monitor developments closely and has appealed to the public and farmers to remain vigilant.
