Mumbai Braces for Intense Rainfall as Monsoon Surges

Mumbai and its surrounding areas are set to experience significant rainfall on August 15, 2025, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a generally cloudy sky accompanied by light to moderate showers and heavy downpours in some locations. Areas such as Santacruz, Colaba, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar are expected to be particularly affected, with the potential for heavy rain leading to flood-like conditions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, signaling the likelihood of heavy showers, while a red alert has been declared for six other districts, including Pune, Satara, Nashik, and Kolhapur, starting August 16 due to anticipated intensified rainfall.

On August 14, Santacruz recorded 35.3 mm of rainfall, while Colaba saw 10.2 mm, and similar precipitation is expected on August 15. A cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal is driving stronger winds, contributing to the increased rainfall. Mumbai’s temperatures are projected to range between 26°C and 30°C, with high humidity levels of 85-90%, creating muggy conditions. Gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, and thunderstorms with lightning are also likely, particularly in the ghat areas of North Madhya Maharashtra.

High tides, peaking at 4.28 meters at 3:54 AM on August 15, may exacerbate waterlogging in low-lying coastal areas like Hindmata, Sion, and Parel, potentially disrupting traffic and rail services. The IMD advises residents to avoid flood-prone zones and urges fishermen to heed local weather warnings due to rough seas. Farmers are also cautioned to protect crops from potential damage due to the wet conditions.
