During a naka-checking operation in the East Garo Hills area of Meghalaya today, four armed persons were killed in a gunfight with police. Their identities and criminal histories are being investigated by police. According to sources, the four armed individuals allegedly opened fire on on-duty officials as they approached the checkpoint for inspection at approximately four in the morning as police were performing naka-checking in the Songsak district of East Garo Hills.
All four males were injured and later died as a result of police retaliation.
The men’s identities had not yet been officially determined. Unverified sources suggest that the men may have had a significant criminal history or connections to people with criminal histories.
More importantly, authorities have confirmed that the four may be connected to an August 25 incident that was reported in Tapra, which is located over the state border.
According to East Garo Hills Superintendent of authorities Swapnil Pawar, authorities were first attempting to identify the men before confirming their backgrounds. The investigators would then look into their potential connections to earlier occurrences.
In addition to gathering further information about the four men and their potential connections to reported crimes, police are also examining the circumstances leading up to the meeting, including the events surrounding the opening of fire.
