Mumbai: A fire broke out late on Monday night at an under-construction section of Mumbai Metro Line 2B near the Bandra Reclamation flyover, creating panic after burning debris reportedly fell close to vehicles moving on the road below.
According to reports by Free Press Journal, the incident took place around 11 pm on the elevated cable-stayed portion of the Metro 2B corridor, a major infrastructure project connecting key parts of Mumbai through an east-west route between Bandra East and Bandra West.
Viral Videos Raise Safety Concerns
Videos circulating on social media showed flames and thick smoke billowing from the elevated metro structure while traffic continued beneath the site. The visuals triggered concerns among commuters and residents regarding safety measures at metro construction zones located above active roads.

The viral clips allegedly showed burning material falling near moving vehicles, intensifying fears about public safety in the busy Bandra area.
MMRDA Releases Official Statement
Following the circulation of the videos, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued an official clarification regarding the incident.
A fire incident was reported on 15 June 2026 at approximately 10:52 PM at the under-construction Metro Line-2B site near P-400 (LHS), Pylon-4, 4th Level.

The authority stated that the fire was reported at approximately 10:52 pm near P-400 (LHS), Pylon-4, Level 4 of the under-construction Metro Line-2B project.
According to MMRDA, the blaze involved wooden shuttering material, commonly known as Doka material, which is used during construction activity. The authority added that the fire was quickly controlled by the site emergency response team along with personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
No Injuries Or Structural Damage Reported
MMRDA confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident and stated that the metro structure did not suffer any damage.
The authority further said that the exact reason behind the fire is still being investigated and that a detailed inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause.
In its statement, MMRDA reiterated its “zero-tolerance” policy towards safety violations at project sites and said strict action would be taken against any agency found violating prescribed safety standards or contractual regulations.
Construction Agency Under Supervision
The package of Metro Line 2B where the incident occurred is being executed by J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd under the supervision of the AICA Consortium, which is serving as the project’s general consultant.
Officials also stated that additional preventive safety measures are now being reinforced across metro construction sites to ensure the protection of workers and the public.
