Mumbai: Friday morning turned into a nightmare for lakhs of commuters after a technical failure on the Western Railway network disrupted local train services during peak office hours. What began as an overhead equipement (OHE) failure between Dadar and Churchgate soon escalated into a larger operational disruption, with delayed trains, cancelled services and unexpected route changes leaving passengers confused across the suburban network.
The impact was felt across the Churchgate-Virar corridor, one of Mumbai’s busiest railway routes. Several fast and slow local trains were running well behind schedule, while some services were cancelled or short terminated to clear the backlog. The delays also affected a number of mail and express trains departing from Mumbai, as congestion spread across the network.
For many commuters however, the biggest frustration was not the delay it was complete lack of information.
One passenger travelling on the 7:32 am Virar-Churchgate Fast local said the train unexpectedly arrived on platform 9 at Andheri, something regular commuters rarely see. As passengers assumed it would continue towards Churchgate, the train was reportedly converted into an Andheri-Virar service midway through the journey without any clear announcement, forcing hundereds to get down and search for another train.
“I had to board a slow local from Andheri to Churchgate. From Bandra to Khar, I met several commuters who had gone through the exact same confusion. Trains were getting canceled, destinations were changing, and nobody seemed to know what was happening,” the commuter said.
The confusion quickly spilled onto station platforms. Heavy crowds were reported at Borivali, Andheri Bandra, Dadar and Churchgate as ofice goers waited for deloayed trains. Every arriving local was packed beyond capacity, making the morning commute even more exhausting.
According to western railway, the disruption began after an OHE failure between Dadar and Churchgate. While engineers were working to restore the power supply, a point failure at Churchgate station further affected train movements, resulting in additional delays and cancellations. Railway teams were immediately deployed, and services were restored in phases through the morning.
Although officials said train operations gradually returned to normal, the ripple effect continued for hours, delaying both suburban locals and several long distance trains originating from Mumbai.
For the millions who rely on Mumbai’s suburban railway everyday, friday’s disruption was another reminder of how a single technical failure during rush hour can bring the city’s lifeline to a standstill. While railway staff worked to restore services, many commuters said timely announcements and better communication could have [revented much of the confusion that unfolded across stations on one of the busiest mornings of the week.
