Mumbai Crime: Bangladeshi National Held for 20-Year Illegal Stay and Possession of Fake Indian Passport

Mumbai: In a serious case of immigration fraud, Mumbai’s Sahar Police have arrested a Bangladeshi national who had been living unlawfully in India for nearly 20 years after sneaking in through the Benapole border in 2005.

The accused, identified as Iclaj Molla, son of Md. Bajilear Molla, allegedly managed to stay in the country without any valid documentation. According to investigators, Molla used fake personal details and a fabricated address to apply for an Indian passport at the Kolkata Regional Passport Office in 2014.

Illegal Stay and Passport Fraud
Using this counterfeit passport, Molla reportedly traveled internationally multiple times. His cover was blown on October 14, 2025, when Mumbai airport immigration officials intercepted him upon his arrival from Kuwait on IndiGo flight 6E-1236. Authorities confirmed that by obtaining and using a fraudulent passport, Molla deceived both the Indian Passport Authority and the Mumbai Immigration Department.

Ongoing Investigation
Following a complaint by the Immigration Department, Sahar Police registered a case under relevant legal sections. The investigation aims to uncover how Molla acquired Indian citizenship documents and carried out repeated foreign travel under a false identity.

Years of Deception
Police sources revealed that Molla not only lived in India illegally but also used forged documents to secure a passport under a false identity. He later took up employment in Kuwait, purchased property in Kolkata, and even renewed his fake Indian passport through Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continuing to impersonate an Indian citizen.

His illegal activities came to light when Immigration Officer Ganesh Gawli detected irregularities during document verification at Mumbai Airport. A detailed inquiry confirmed Molla’s illegal status and passport forgery. Based on this report, Sahar Police lodged an FIR and produced him before the court, which has remanded him to judicial custody.

Investigators also discovered that Molla was planning to bring his family from Bangladesh including relatives from Hussainpur, Maizpara, and Narel to India through fraudulent visas and passports, intending to help them secure Indian citizenship by similar illegal means.
