Just 6 Months After Inauguration, Roof Collapses At Mumbai Civic Body’s New Office

At one of the recently opened offices of Mumbai’s civic organization, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a portion of the false ceiling fell this morning, barely allowing a few workers to escape.

At the BMC’s K/North Ward office in Jogeshwari, the roof fell directly outside the cabin of assistant commissioner Rupali Kadam.

Water leaks after rain were also observed in a number of cabins at the workplace, which opened around six months ago.

Workers complained about subpar work in the new building and expressed worries about the quality of the building materials. In order to guarantee that there is no future risk to employee safety, they insisted that the administration assess the whole office and make the necessary repairs right away. They also insisted that the work be done to a high standard this time.

The event occurs at a time when the BMC, the wealthiest municipal organization in Asia, is under severe criticism for how it handled monsoon rains.

Mumbai, India’s financial hub, has experienced significant waterlogging in several locations since the monsoon began on June 23. At least three deaths from tree-fall events were also reported in the city.

On June 30, a tree toppled on a moving school bus in suburban Chembur, killing an 11-year-old kid. A tree limb struck an 18-year-old man’s head on July 4 when he was riding a motorcycle with pals in Aarey Colony during a period of intense rain. On July 5, a tree fell on a store in Kurla (West), killing a 63-year-old man.
