Mumbai: Mumbaikars will now have to pay more for compressed natural gas (CNG) after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a ₹2 per kilogram increase in CNG prices across Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). With the revised rates coming into effect from midnight on Thursday, the cost of CNG has risen to ₹84 per kg.
The company said the hike was necessary due to rising gas procurement expenses caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, increasing crude oil prices, and the weakening of the Indian rupee against the US dollar. MGL stated that disruptions in the global energy supply chain have significantly raised operational costs.
The development is expected to affect lakhs of daily commuters, especially those dependent on CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, taxis, and commercial vehicles in Mumbai and nearby areas. Transport operators may face higher running costs, and there are concerns that public transport fares could also witness upward pressure if fuel prices continue to rise.
Recent instability in West Asia and the ongoing global energy uncertainty have already impacted fuel markets worldwide. Reports from multiple media outlets indicate that energy companies across India are facing mounting pressure due to volatile international fuel prices.
