Mumbai Braces for Intense Heat and Deteriorating Air Quality

Mumbai: Residents of Mumbai are reeling under soaring daytime temperatures and oppressive humidity, with the combination of intense heat and rising pollution levels creating a challenging situation for public health.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is experiencing a noticeable spike in heat as March draws to a close. On Wednesday, March 25, the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 27°C while the maximum is expected to touch nearly 30°C. Although these figures may appear moderate on paper, the high humidity level of 59 per cent is making the conditions feel far more uncomfortable, significantly increasing the “feels-like” temperature.

The IMD has warned that temperatures could climb further in the coming week, potentially reaching up to 32°C. The weather agency has urged citizens to exercise caution amid the rising heat.

Compounding the discomfort is a sharp decline in air quality. Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) currently stands around 160, placing it in the “poor” category. Experts note that the combination of higher temperatures and stagnant air is causing dust particles and pollutants to remain trapped closer to the ground, which can aggravate respiratory issues.

Health specialists have issued practical guidelines to help residents cope with the dual challenge of heat and poor air. They advise avoiding outdoor exposure between 12 noon and 4 pm when the sun is at its strongest. Staying well-hydrated by consuming plenty of water, lemon water, or buttermilk is strongly recommended. Those stepping out should protect themselves with caps, umbrellas, and sunglasses.

For individuals with existing respiratory conditions, young children, and senior citizens, wearing masks outdoors is particularly advisable due to the deteriorated air quality.

The IMD forecast indicates that the heatwave-like conditions are likely to persist in the coming days, making it essential for Mumbaikars to prioritise their well-being while navigating this harsh weather phase.
