Surge In Swine Flu Cases In Mumbai

The number of H1N1 (swine flu) infections in Mumbai has increased over the past three months, rising from 62 instances during the same period last year to 441 this year. In contrast to the 20% increase in malaria cases, this represents a 612% increase.

The monsoon data for June, July, and August from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shows that there were 4,485 instances of malaria and 441 cases of H1N1 between June and August, compared to 3,733 cases the previous year.

BMC has been screening suspected H1N1 patients and administering oseltamivir in an effort to stop the swine flu outbreak. Additionally, surveys are being carried out in the impacted areas where the H1N1 positive cases have been found.

According to the BMC, suspected H1N1 patients are being screened and given oseltamivir as needed. Door-to-door surveys are being carried out in afflicted areas, and close contacts of sick individuals are being observed for ten days.

Additionally, BMC highlighted that in order to manage patients for hospitalization, they have prepared ventilators, PPE kits, reserved beds, and medications.

Malaria cases have been highest in Mumbai’s E-ward, K-West ward, G-South ward, F-South ward, and H-West ward thus far. BMC has stepped up field-level monitoring in the majority of impacted locations to fight the vector-borne illness.

In order to prevent malaria, 52,197 possible breeding locations have been surveyed. 8,055 Anopheles mosquito breeding sites, 12,55,469 prospective mosquito breeding sites for dengue control, and 27,352 Aedes mosquito breeding sites were found.

Dengue, leptospirosis, COVID-19, chikungunya, and gastroenteritis cases decreased in Mumbai. According to BMC data, the number of COVID-19 cases decreased significantly by 77% this year, from 668 to 151.

Dengue has decreased by 20% this year, with 1,563 cases reported in June, July, and August. Cases of chikungunya have decreased by 87%, from 370 to 46.

This year, there was a 37% decrease in leptospirosis cases, from 406 to 255, and a decrease in gastroenteritis cases, from 2,197 to 1,954.
