Loved by People, Praised by Leaders: Rohit Sharma Awarded Padma Shri by the President of India

New Delhi: Rohit Sharma, an Indian cricketer and former captain, is a player who has led India and made the nation proud in all formats of the sport under his reign. In recent times, Sharma has emerged as someone who has “heartlocked” his existence into the lives of several fans and is now also officially recognized by the nation, having been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. Sharma was presented with this award by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for his contributions to Indian cricket.

The ceremony, led by President Droupadi Murmu, was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on June 23, 2026. Sharma earned this recognition after an illustrious cricketing career spanning over 18 years, during which he mastered all formats as a batter and captain. The Mumbai-based star led Team India in the 2024 T20 World Cup and secured the title, followed by a victorious campaign in the Champions Trophy in 2025. These crucial and significant wins made him a top-ranked player. Apart from his captaincy, he holds several batting records that are astonishingly remarkable and rare; his ODI record remains one of the finest of all time, with 11,720 runs across 285 matches at an average of 48.83 and a strike rate of 92.97.

His three double-centuries in ODIs serve as a prime example of his “alchemy.” Having played 67 Test matches, Rohit scored 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, including his legendary 212 against South Africa. The world was shocked by his retirement from this format in May 2025. Enjoying a well-pitched T20 career, his international T20 journey ended on an ecstatic note with the lifting of the prestigious ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. Having played a record-breaking 150+ T20I matches, Rohit has influenced upcoming cricketers above par.

Having exited from other forms of international competition, Rohit continues to shine in the ODI format and is likely to play for India in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The award ceremony witnessed 65 honors during the second phase of the investiture proceedings. With this civilian honor, Rohit has added a high-profile, humane award to his list of accomplishments.
