MMRDA Approves Extended Metro Line 5 Route Across Key MMR Cities

In a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced a major expansion of Metro Line 5. The corridor will now stretch to a total length of 34.21 kilometres, incorporating the newly approved Metro Line 5A extension.

This development is expected to substantially improve connectivity between key areas including Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar. The announcement was made by the MMRDA on Thursday, positioning the expanded line as one of the longest metro corridors in the MMR.

According to the authority, the original Metro Line 5 project measured 22.38 kilometres. The addition of the 11.83-kilometre Metro Line 5A section brings the combined corridor to its new total length. Officials have estimated the overall cost of this expanded project at Rs 18,130 crore.

The extension aims to address growing transportation demands in the rapidly developing suburbs north-east of Mumbai. By linking these important residential and commercial hubs, the project is set to offer commuters a faster and more reliable public transport alternative to road travel.

The MMRDA has been actively working on multiple metro corridors across the region to create a robust network that reduces congestion and supports sustainable development. The inclusion of Line 5A reflects continued efforts to integrate peripheral areas into the city’s expanding transit system.

This latest update comes as part of broader initiatives by the MMRDA to strengthen infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The expanded Metro Line 5 is anticipated to play a crucial role in easing daily travel for thousands of residents once operational.
