One NCP Again? Sharad Pawar’s Late Night Meeting With Devendra Fadnavis Over Maharashtra’s Political Future

Mumbai: A late night meeting between Nationalist Congress Party cheif Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Cheif Minister Devandra Fadnavis has once again set off intense political speculation, with fresh discussions emerging over whether Maharashtra could be heading towards another political realignment.

The meeting, which took place away from the public glare, immediately triggered debates across political circles and social media. While leaders close to both camps have maintained that such interactions are not unusual and should not be viewed through a political lens, the timing of the meeting has fueled questions about the future of opposition politics in Maharashtra.

The development comes at a time when the Sharad Pawar led NCP faction has been battling persistent rumours of internal unease and possible shifts in political equations. Recent meetings between Sharad Pawar and senior leaders from the ruling alliance, including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, have already raised eyebrows within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), with alliance partners publicly questioning the optics of such engagements.

Political observers point out that Sharad Pawar has long cultivated a reputation for maintaining communication across party lines, irrespective of political differences. Over the decades, Pawar has often met leaders from rival parties, arguing that dialogue remains an essential part of democratic politics. His meetings with BJP leaders, including Devendra Fadnavis, have frequently generated speculation in the past, though many ultimately ended without any formal political alliance.

However, Maharashtra’s recent political history ensures that every such interaction is closely scrutinised. The dramatic developments of 2019, when Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar briefly formed an 80 hour government before it collapsed, continue to shape public perception. The subsequent split in the Nationalist Congress Party in 2023, which saw Ajit Pawar and several senior leaders join the ruling alliance, further deepened political mistrust and altered the state’s political landscape.

Adding to the speculation are reports of internal discussions and organisational challenges within both factions of the NCP. In recent months, several political developments including meetings involving members of the Pawar family and senior BJP leaders have led to renewed chatter about possible changes in Maharashtra’s political equations, although none has translated into an official alliance or merger.

Neither Sharad Pawar nor Devendra Fadnavis has publicly indicated that the latest meeting was aimed at forging a new political understanding. Leaders from both sides have repeatedly dismissed speculation whenever similar meetings have taken place, describing them as courtesy interactions or discussions on matters concerning the state. As of now, there has been no official announcement suggesting any change in existing political alignments.

For now, the late night meeting has succeeded in doing what Maharashtra politics often does best keeping everyone guessing. Whether it was simply a courtesy interaction or the beginning of another chapter in the state’s ever evolving political story remains a question that only future developments can answer.
