Maharashtra Congress Suffers Major Setback as 12 Suspended Councillors Join BJP Ahead of BMC Elections

Mumbai: Political activity has intensified in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections. In a significant development before the BMC polls, all 12 suspended Congress councillors have formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan inducted the councillors into the party.

12 Councillors Shift to BJP

Following their induction, Ravindra Chavan shared an update on social media platform X. In his post, he wrote that inspired by the BJP’s development-oriented and public welfare-driven approach, Ubatha group’s Kalyan Rural Deputy District Chief Rahul Bhagat has chosen to support the “lotus of development.” He added that Bhagat was warmly welcomed into the BJP family and extended best wishes for his journey with the party.

Chavan further mentioned that several prominent leaders were present at the event, including former chairman of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s standing committee and unopposed BJP candidate Deepesh Mhatre, along with Jayesh Mhatre, Harshadtai Bhoir, and other dignitaries.

These councillors had earlier formed a new outfit called the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi (AVA) while contesting the Ambernath Municipal Council elections in Thane district in alliance with the BJP. After they floated a separate group, the Congress suspended all 12 councillors. They have now officially joined the BJP.

Ambernath Municipal Council Elections

In the Ambernath Municipal Council elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena emerged as the single-largest party, winning 27 seats—four short of the majority mark. The BJP secured 14 seats, Congress won 12, and the NCP bagged 4 seats.

The BJP made a strategic move in these elections by sidelining the Shinde faction, despite it being the largest party. Instead, the BJP joined hands with Congress and the NCP to form the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi. With the support of an independent councillor, the alliance reached a total of 32 members, surpassing the required majority of 30 seats.
