FDA Juggernaut Marches On, 110-Year Old Parsi Dairy Farm’s Licence Suspended

Mumbai-based Parsi Dairy Farm Pvt Ltd’s food business license has been suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to significant violations of food safety and cleanliness, officials announced on Thursday.

They stated that food items valued at over Rs 1.90 crore were seized as part of a statewide enforcement campaign that included the crackdown on the well-known business.

The FDA said in a statement that Parsi Dairy Farm Pvt Ltd’s FSSAI license was immediately suspended after inspections at the company’s Princess Street location in south Mumbai turned up many infractions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and associated rules.

According to the report, inspectors discovered unsanitary conditions, such as a damaged raw milk reception dock, cracks in manufacturing and storage facilities, incorrect raw material and finished product storage, a high fly infestation, damaged flooring and drainage, and the lack of an effluent treatment plant.

According to officials, the FDA team also discovered missing “Best Before/Use By/Expiry Date” information on a number of products, poor vehicle sanitation records, insufficient protective gear for workers, and incomplete medical records of food handlers. These deficiencies posed a serious risk of microbial contamination and public health hazards. The FDA stated that until additional orders and legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act have been started, the unit is not allowed to manufacture, store, sell, or distribute food items.

“There was a significant risk of microbiological contamination and public health risks due to the shortcomings. Until additional orders and legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act have been started, the unit is not allowed to manufacture, store, sell, or distribute food goods, according to the FDA.

The FDA visited dairy facilities, food producers, restaurants, and sellers throughout Maharashtra on July 14 and 15 as part of a special statewide inspection campaign, which included the action against Parsi Dairy, according to officials. “2,317 liters of milk, 30 liters of refined oil intended for buffaloes, and 6,849.25 kg of dairy products worth Rs 45.78 lakh were seized as a result of the drive.

Additionally, the agency confiscated food goods worth Rs 53.90 lakh and prohibited food products worth Rs 1.36 crore. After 57 hotels, restaurants, and cafes in the state were inspected, 27 facilities received improvement notices, according to the statement.
