Mumbai: Law enforcement authorities have initiated legal proceedings against social media influencer Nazia Ilahi Khan following allegations that she made derogatory comments targeting Prophet Muhammad, which have distressed members of the Muslim community.
An First Information Report (FIR) has already been logged at the Shanti Nagar police station in Bhiwandi, while separate legal procedures are actively being processed by the police in Mumbai.
Complaint Lodged in Bhiwandi
The initial legal action came to light after a local resident, Ravish Momin, approached the Shanti Nagar police station in Bhiwandi to lodge an official complaint. Momin alleged that the online influencer shared a post across social media channels containing remarks directed at Prophet Muhammad that severely offended the religious feelings of the community. Acting on this statement, the local police registered an FIR against Ilahi.
Raza Academy Demands Direct Action
Simultaneously, the issue escalated within Mumbai city limits as representatives from the Raza Academy took formal steps to seek justice. On June 20, a delegation consisting of legal advisors and members of the organization—spearheaded by its founder and president, Alhaj Muhammad Saeed Noori—converged at the Pydhonie Police Station. The group presented a formal written complaint to the authorities, demanding the swift arrest of Nazia Ilahi Khan. According to the academy, her public assertions directly targeted Islamic religious beliefs and caused deep emotional distress across the community.
Jurisdictional Transfer via Zero FIR
While local authorities acknowledged the receipt of the Raza Academy’s complaint, the case is slated to be handed over to another state due to jurisdictional parameters.
In an exclusive statement to The Free Press Journal (FPJ), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ragsudha confirmed that law enforcement officials are currently recording statements from the relevant parties involved. The DCP further explained that a Zero FIR is in the process of being registered at the Pydhonie police station. Once these initial formalities are concluded, the entire case file will be transferred to West Bengal, as the core jurisdiction of the alleged offense falls under the purview of the West Bengal Police.
