Who Are The Viral Rooftoppers Behind The Empire State Building Proposal? Couple Released After Arrest

Russian rooftoppers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus (Ivan Kuzentsov) have been released on supervised release after their dramatic marriage proposal atop the Empire State Building captured global attention. The couple was arrested on July 1 after illegally climbing the building 1454 foot antenna, where Beerkus proposed while the pair unfurled a banner reading, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

Known as two of the world’s most famous “rooftoppers,” Nikolau and Beerkus have built a massive social media following by scaling skyscrapers, cranes and landmarks without safety gear. Their relationship and extreme adventures were featured in Netflix 2024 documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which introduced their high risk lifestyle to a global audience.

Following the stunt, New York police arrested the couple on multiple charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. They appeared before a Manhattan court and were released without bail under New York law, but remain under supervised release while the case proceeds. If convicted, they could face significant prison time.

The viral proposal has divided opinion online, with many calling it one of the most daring engagements ever filmed, while others criticized the unauthorized climb for risking lives and prompting a major emergency response. Authorities are continuing to investigate how the pair gained access to the Empire State Building’s restricted antenna area.
