Video : Mob Chased Me With Sticks : Indian Tourist Trapped In Nepal Appeals For Help

New Delhi : Videos of tourists stranded in the Himalayan nation have flooded social media, appealing for evacuation. One such video that has gone viral is of an Indian woman who has described her harrowing experience in Pokhara.

The tourist, who identified herself as Upastha Gill, said she travelled to Nepal for a volleyball tournament. She appealed to the Indian government to rescue her as the unrest in Nepal continued for the third day. Over 20 people have died in clashes with police after thousands of young Nepalese citizens hit the streets to protest the KP Sharma Oli government’s social media ban.

The agitation has snowballed into widespread protests against corruption and nepotism, forcing the Nepali Prime Minister to resign. Gill, sobbing inconsolably, said the protesters were not sparing even tourists. She said that she was in a spa at her hotel when the protesters stormed in and chased her with sticks.

All my belongings, were in my room, and the entire hotel was set on fire. I was in the spa, and people were running behind me with very large sticks, and I barely managed to escape with my life, she further said. Describing the situation in Nepal as very bad, the woman said protesters were setting everything on fire, with scant respect for tourists.

The situation here is very bad. Fires are being set on roads everywhere. They are not sparing tourists here. They are setting fires everywhere without thinking, and the situation has become very, very bad, she further said. At the end, she made a fervent appeal to the Indian embassy to help her and other stranded tourists.

More than 400 Indians are stranded in Kathmandu. With airports shut in Nepal and Indian airlines suspending flights, some stranded Indian nationals were brought back via the India-Nepal border in Sonauli, Uttar Pradesh. Some also crossed the border at Panitanki, Darjeeling, to return to India.
