Trump Pauses ‘Project Freedom’ Amid Signs Of Progress In Iran Peace Talks

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to “Project Freedom,” a naval operation aimed at facilitating the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing encouraging developments in ongoing negotiations with Iran. The decision, reported by Firstpost, comes shortly after the initiative was launched to address disruptions in the strategically vital waterway.

According to reports, Trump stated that the suspension follows requests from Pakistan and other countries, alongside what he described as “significant progress” toward reaching a comprehensive agreement with Tehran. He clarified that while the movement of ships under Project Freedom would pause for a limited period, the broader US-led blockade against Iran would remain fully operational.

The move reflects a shift in emphasis from military operations to diplomatic engagement. Project Freedom had been introduced to escort commercial vessels through the Strait amid heightened tensions, with Washington accusing Iran of targeting ships in the region—claims Tehran has denied.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the United States has already concluded the offensive phase of its campaign, referred to as “Operation Epic Fury,” and is now concentrating on ensuring maritime security while pursuing a negotiated resolution. He stressed that the operation was defensive in nature and that US forces would act only in response to threats.

Despite the pause, tensions in the region remain high, with recent confrontations involving naval assets and commercial vessels underscoring the fragile security situation. However, the temporary suspension is being viewed as a confidence-building step aimed at creating space for finalising a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Trump reiterated that economic and strategic pressure on Iran would continue through the existing blockade, even as negotiations progress. The development signals a cautious but notable turn toward diplomacy in a conflict that has significantly impacted regional stability and global trade routes.
