Trump Floats 200% Champagne Tariff If Macron Snubs Peace Board

New York : US President Donald Trump vowed to impose a 200 percent tariff on French wines and champagnes after his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, declined to join the Washington-led Board of Peace, an initiative aimed at addressing international conflicts. On Monday evening, while speaking to reporters, Trump was questioned about Macron’s statement that he would not join the Board of Peace.

On Truth Social, Trump even shared a screenshot of a private message from Macron, in which the French President said he could “set up a G7 meeting on Thursday in Paris with the Ukrainians, Danish and Syrians,” adding, “Let us try to build better things.” Its charter goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza. (It) raises major questions, particularly regarding respect for the principles and structure of the UN, the source was quoted as saying. Earlier on Monday, the French Foreign Ministry also reiterated its commitment to the United Nations, calling it “the keystone of effective multilateralism.”

In a sarcastic post on X, the official French Foreign Ministry response account ridiculed the justification offered by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, using exaggerated analogies to criticise Trump’s obsession with the Danish territory. If there were a fire someday, firefighters would intervene — so better burn the house now. If a shark might attack someday, intervention would follow — so better eat the lifeguard now. If there were a crash someday, damage would occur — so better ram the car now,” it said.

According to a draft charter circulated to about 60 countries by the US administration, prospective members of the Board of Peace would be required to contribute $1 billion in cash if they seek to maintain their membership for more than three years. The financial commitment is designed to fund peacekeeping and conflict resolution activities worldwide. The US invitation to join the Board of Peace outlines broad roles for member countries in ending global conflicts and supporting diplomatic resolutions.
