Gunfire Shatters Toronto Salsa Festival: 2 Killed, Several Injured As Police Hunt Suspect

Toronto: A festive summer evening in Toronto turned into a scene of panic and tragedy after a shooting near the popular Salsa on St. Clair street festival left two people dead and at least four others injured. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigators work to determine the circumstances behind the attack.
The shooting erupted on Saturday evening near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where thousands had gathered to celebrate one of Canada’s largest Latin cultural festivals. Initial reports prompted police to warn of an active shooter, but authorities later clarified that the violence appeared to involve an exchange of gunfire between two individuals who were targeting each other, rather than an indiscriminate attack on festival-goers.
Toronto Police confirmed that two adult men died at the scene, while at least four other people suffered gunshot injuries. Some media outlets later reported a higher number of wounded, but officials have continued to investigate and have not yet released complete details on every victim. Authorities recovered two firearms from the scene, though no arrests had been made at the time of the latest police briefing.
The gunfire sent crowds scrambling for safety as festival attendees fled through nearby streets, restaurants and businesses. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with families running for cover and people seeking shelter inside shops after hearing multiple gunshots. Emergency responders quickly secured the area and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
The Salsa on St. Clair festival is one of Toronto’s best known cultural events, celebrating Latin American music, dance and cuisine. The annual festival attracts thousands of visitors each year and is regarded as one of Canada’s largest Latin street celebrations, making the violence particularly shocking for residents and visitors alike.
Canadian leaders condemned the attack, with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressing condolences to the victims’ families and pledging support for the ongoing investigation. Officials praised first responders for their rapid response while urging anyone with photos, videos or information from the scene to contact investigators.
Police continue to examine evidence from multiple crime scenes and review surveillance footage to identify those responsible. Investigators have not yet announced a motive, and authorities are asking the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
