Sunken Battleships, Prehistoric Fossils Found In Drying Danube River

The Danube River’s water levels have fallen to all-time lows due to unprecedented heatwaves and ongoing drought throughout Europe. It was at its lowest point since 1996. Both biotic elements and waterways throughout Europe have been impacted by the river’s drying up.

Long-forgotten parts of history have started emerging from the muddy riverbed as one of the continent’s main rivers contracts. Near the Serbian port of Prahovo, CBS News reported seeing a rusty hull and a damaged pole where the Nazi flag formerly flew.

In order to obstruct the river channel, retreating German commanders purposefully sunk hundreds of their own ships in 1944 as Soviet forces advanced.

Tonnes of live ammunition and unexploded artillery rounds are still present in many of the exposed hulks, posing a serious risk to the safety of nearby fishermen and boat operators.

According to the research, the drying Danube River has made at least 20 World War II ships visible to the people.

According to Reuters, which cited the BTA news agency, the remains of what is thought to be an ancient mammoth have been discovered in northern Bulgaria.

A villager of the village of Ryahovo discovered the remains. Ivica Gavrilovic, who lives next to the Danube, was cited by the media site as saying, “People still don’t know how to access the ships themselves.” He claimed that although it’s challenging to get to them, people are fascinated in the wrecks.

Experts deployed to the location identified a lower jaw, two tusks, and potentially a mammoth rib, according to museum director Nikolay Nenov, who told BTA that the bones will be taken for more analysis on Thursday in order to accurately determine the find’s provenance and age.

Nenov stated, “I would not call it a sensation, but any discovery of such ancient remains is very important for science,” according to Reuters.

According to Nenov, it has long been thought that the animal most likely died thousands of years ago in a swamp.
