In the first presidential election in 35 years, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was chosen on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to Chief Election Commissioner and Election Returning Officer AMM Nasir Uddin, the 78-year-old BNP stalwart defeated his opponent, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, the head of the Liberal Democratic Party and the nominee of the 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to him, Oli Ahmad received 88 votes and Mr. Alamgir received 255.
343 of the 349 registered voters cast ballots in the election. He said that six MPs abstained from voting.
On Friday, August 21, 2026, in the evening in Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall, the president-elect will take the oath of office.
Bangladesh has not held a presidential election since 1991; in previous decades, the position has mostly been filled by consensus and uncontested polls.
Mohammed Shahabuddin, a close adviser to Sheik Hasina, the ousted prime minister, resigned last month due to health concerns before serving out his five-year term, necessitating the presidential election.
