20-Year-Old IIT Bombay Student Commits Suicide, Body Found In Hostel Room

On Tuesday, a 20-year-old second-year material science student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, committed suicide in his dorm room on the Powai campus.

The student was last seen in class on Tuesday, according to an officer with knowledge of the case, but he did not answer his parents’ calls after 5 p.m.

His parents contacted him again at 10.30 p.m., but he didn’t answer. This led them to contact the IIT security personnel, who went to his room and discovered it locked from the inside, according to a Powai police station officer.

Personnel from the Powai police station busted through the door and discovered the student dead after the institute administration notified the police. In accordance with section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the police then notified his parents in Rajasthan and filed an accidental death report.

Police said that he used a bedsheet to hang himself from the ceiling fan.

In accordance with Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the Powai Police have filed an ADR (Accidental Death Report). According to police, the student was originally from Pilani, Rajasthan, and a preliminary investigation revealed that he was going through a challenging time in his relationship and dealing with family-related problems.

The officer who was previously mentioned stated, “An investigation is underway to determine the exact reason behind his death and all angles are probing.”

Family members identified the student’s body on Wednesday at Rajawadi Hospital, where a post mortem was performed. Later, the body was transported by plane to the family’s home in Pilani.

Since this was the second reported student suicide this year, students at the institute voiced worries about responsibility.

To determine the precise causes and circumstances of the incident, authorities are looking through his cell phone, conversations, and other technological devices.

The case is being looked into further.

Days prior, a third-year BTech student at IIT Guwahati was discovered deceased on the campus. The student, was originally from Puri, Odisha. He lived at the Brahmaputra Hostel and worked at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
According to police sources, the student allegedly leaped from a campus building’s fifth floor on July 26 at around 2:30 p.m.

An official statement from IIT Guwahati stated, “The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter.”
