Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will embark On A visit To India

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will embark on a visit to India as the opening leg of a three-nation tour that also includes Australia and Japan. The trip, announced on February 23, 2026, aims to bolster Canada’s trade diversification strategy and forge deeper partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
Mr. Carney is scheduled to land in Mumbai on February 27, where he will engage with business leaders and explore investment opportunities. He will then travel to New Delhi for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2. Discussions are expected to center on ambitious new collaborations in trade, energy, technology including artificial intelligence (AI), talent and culture exchanges, and defence cooperation.
The visit underscores Canada’s Indo-Pacific policy priorities, emphasizing stronger engagement with partners such as India, which is part of the Quad alongside the United States, Australia, and Japan. Officials highlighted ongoing negotiations toward a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) to expand bilateral trade and investment. Areas of focus include opportunities in fossil fuels, nuclear energy, critical minerals technology, and advanced sectors like AI.

This engagement comes against the backdrop of a gradual thaw in India-Canada relations, which had faced significant strain following allegations related to the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Recent diplomatic efforts, including Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Mr. Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Alberta in June 2025 and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Canada in early February 2026, have helped rebuild momentum.
In a statement, Prime Minister Carney emphasized the importance of proactive steps in an unpredictable global environment: “In a more uncertain world, Canada is focused on what we can control. We are diversifying our trade and attracting massive new investment to create new opportunities for our workers and businesses.” He added, “We are forging new partnerships abroad to create greater certainty, security and prosperity at home.”
The tour reflects Canada’s broader push to reduce economic reliance on traditional partners amid shifting international dynamics, including recent tensions with the United States over tariffs. After India, Mr. Carney will proceed to Australia for talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and an address to Parliament, followed by meetings in Japan with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
